Fjord Light (for my grandmother)
sung in her eyes and hair
she carried it with her
across the ocean
through Ellis Island
westward— always westward
light in her auburn curls
flecks of midnight sun
in her brown eyes
never setting once
in the long summer evenings
fjord light
she poured the light
into the Montana soil
wheat as sweet as the sun
plowed in furrows
sown with seeds
planted in the new land
she carried it with her
moon-glow, dusk dimmed
into the city
spreading it out
until it shone
in children and grandchildren
light of the north
and sun-streaked snow
fjord light

beautiful, a wonderful tribute
Really lovely… particularly the flecks of midnight sun in her eyes, and the idea of that same light shining in children and grandchildren!
Lots of great images/phrases, good use of repetition to give it that quality of carrying down through generations…
This is really beautiful. Not only your use of light images but your variation and repetition of vowels. A great read.
Intricate imagery…,
beautiful thought…
you are great….
BTW
its my birthday july 08..! heheh
Lovely poem, love how you carried the light through it all.
Beautifully written Pam. Bravo!
I like your use of her eyes and the descriptions/meaning you give, quite a lovely poem
You are one of the REAL poets, Pam, keep up the good work.
An absolutely stunning piece!
Oh my, I’m so glad you stopped by my page. This is beautiful! The way you filtered the use of light through the poem, ingenious!
I also felt an affinity with this piece. My Grandparents came from Sweden and were subjected to Ellis Island.
Would you mind if I linked you? You’re a fan of The Doctor, how can I not link up with you!
a lovely tribute, with that northern fjord light flowing thoughout the poem
I am in awe. Lovely.
Love how this one woman’s light is the catalyst for everything.
Well-written, each line flows gently into the next moving
the reader gently along the story.
Would love an Ophelia poem from you Pam.
A beautiful love poem, in a different sense of the term from the usual.
Nice one.
