One Rosary (broken) – for Thomas Merton
four stone walls and worn floor
small bed with a single blanket
one lamp on a table
a wooden straight-backed chair
leather-bound brevary– open
a bowl to wash in
pitcher full of water
one rosary
(broken)
one life
simply
a single prayer

I want to go there. Life is too full (and I’m complaining?) This is a beautiful little poem. It shows me exactly what I want, how far away I am from it, and that I have other things to do. Maybe in the next life. Quiet. Simplicity.
The monastic life is the poet’s hour, isn’t it? Wonderful.
I wonder what would happen to our societ if everyone decided to live so simply. This is a beautiful scene you’ve set.
That should read “society” I wish I could type!
Beautifully expressed Pam. What an interesting topic to explore. G
Beautiful. One of your best.
Simply and elegantly you have descibed this life of prayer
and living inside the joy of simpleness. I’ve always been
enraptured with my idea of the Nun’s or Monk’s life but
my discipline is sorely lacking. Adore the photograph also.
