Mocking Courtships

6:00 AM
the phone is ringing
from the back corner
of the yard
spilling out from the throat
of the mockingbird
perched on the corner
of the fence
he calls and calls
waiting for someone
to pick up and answer
maybe he hopes
for a shy girl-bird
who only talks over the phone
who will softly reply
to his shrill ring
they will talk for hours
phone bills running ever higher
he says
she says
until finally he coaxes her out
next to his side
flashing his fine white markings
and they look at each other
one sharp dark eye to another
