June

Oh, June, balance the year
smooth out the differences
between night and day
hold the scales of light and dark
in complete balance
let the scent of honeysuckle
rise and rise into the sky
to float back down
to rest against my cheek
and lean into my breast
bring the summer storms
to shake the willow branches
in a frantic dance
and tear the leaves free
to float upon the ground
Oh June, with the scent
of cut grass and the sound
of children playing long into night
sing to me a soft ballad
sing me to sleep tonight
