The Mere Idea of Lying Down
- after a line by Jose’ Saramago in Blindness
the waking dream
brings the feel of silken sheets
brushing along bare arms
bare legs
a caressed remembrance
dim light of a shaded lamp
lit long into the deep darkness
throws soft shadows of curtains
moving in and out
breathing with the night breeze
mere difference between lamp
shadow and night
just a change in temperature
as fingers move from warm light
to cool darkness
a memory of sleep
lies on the skin
like a body searching in the bed
for the hollow prepared for it
by the mere idea of lying down

Those memories can be so vivid–if only they could bring the rest!
Beautiful image of the curtains, Pam. This is really wonderful.
I remember sleep well. It used to be I could sleep for eight hours straight. Now I awak for my shoulder pain in three hours, my leg pain in two hours, to go to the bathroom in four hours, and for breakfast in seven hours.
Oh yes, I do remember other things in the night, other than sleep. You did well.
..
such an intimate feeling !
pardon me, but I’m one of those who feels that sleeping might be a waste of time – but this poem makes the mere act of wanting to go to sleep so inviting and intimate!
=)
Those memories on the edge can be so powerful – like your words.
One of my most favorite things is the feeling I get when I get into a bed with fresh sheets. Intimate and indulgent!
Having insomnia, I never really get to enjoy sleep that much…not even with the knock-out medication I take. Thanks for giving me a more inviting look at what a lot of people take for granted.
This seems to speak more about the beautiful waking dream, intimacy and absence than it does about sleep or the lack thereof. My reading anyhow. Beautiful images.
I loved your interpretation of this prompt. Like a sensuous dream, reading each line. Lovely!
The senses shift according to need and ability – I enjoyed the way you worded the premise from ‘Blindness’.
I particularly like the fine distinction between “lamp/shadow and night” — qualitatively if not quantitatively different!
beautiful
Hello Pam~ I was creating drop down menus at my blog to clear some space when I was taken by your beautiful poem. Hope all is well with you. Have a nice day.
Oh I would love some of this — I have insomnia so bad it’s embarrassing to talk about. I truly enjoyed this.
i love this. It reminds me so much of that special place between wakefullness and sleep that on rare occasion you find yourself feeling this luxuious!
Great write!
