Good News for Hobbit-heads
It’s been a twisty, turny time, my precious, but it’s all come out ok in the end.
Well, sorta. After three years of wrangling and fighting and back-biting, Peter Jackson and New Line Pictures have finally agreed to go ahead with the Hobbit together, with Jackson and his wife Fran Walsh producing. It’s uncertain who will direct the projected two films–Jackson says he can’t free up his schedule–but that’s not stopping the faithful fan-boys-and-girls over at TheOneRing.net from twittering at great length about all the possibilities. Rumored directors include Guillermo del Torro and Sam Raimi, with Raimi seemingly in the lead. Personally, if Jackson doesn’t do the deed, I’d vote for del Toro.
I might even vote for him, anyway . . . Pan’s Labyrinth was the best film of 2006, and Jackson didn’t exactly knock me out with his remake of King Kong. Still, fully 90% of the folks polled over at TheOneRing.net would prefer it if Jackson both produced and directed. That might have something to do with the outcome, if the suits over at New Line are willing to wait for Jackson’s schedule to clear. Or, it might not.
Time Magazine has a summary of the whole New Line/Peter Jackson affair; Kristin Thompson over at her and David Bordwell’s blog has been keeping up with the Jacksons for years.
