I watched all of Kubrick chronologically last year and I think 2001 rises above all his movies as the definite best. It is a mystery, but not an impenetrable one. It also has groundbreaking special effects on its side that will probably have it earning accolades forever.

In my opinion, EWS is his second best film. Only Kubrick could have made a film about sex that remains cool, calm, and composed throughout. In the end, his view of sex seems to be a bit puritanical, wouldn't you say?

I don't think it will have near the reputation of 2001 in 40 years, but I do think the film community will gain much more respect for it.

Yeah, there were some of those other controlled substances around, and yeah, I probably inhaled.

As far as Eyes goes, I wouldn't call it a pleasant film, or an entertaining one, but I think it will eventually be recognized as an important one, if not of the magnitude of 2001 or others

I have to laugh at your recollection of seeing "2001" on the big screen for the first time. Like you, I first saw it in college in the late 70s; I also came away with that "Eh?" reaction, although not enhanced by any liquid substances in my system. (The auditorium, however, had the distinct aroma of other controlled substances being smoked to enhance the moviegoing experience.Perhaps I inhaled something secondhand :)
My memories of "Eyes Wide Shut" are strongly influenced by the fact that I was coming down with a flu when I first saw it, and getting sicker by the minute as it went on. Just thinking of that annoying, plinking piano note on the soundtrack makes me feel queasy all over again. I'd like to see it again - in good health and with the distance that time provides from the controversy at the time of its release. It might be a better movie than I remember.
