Oh Frabjous Day!

Well, maybe not frabjous, exactly, maybe more like groovy, but Carl Th. Dreyer’s Day of Wrath has a new, digitally-restored print.  And now, more people than ever — maybe more than 10? — can see this dark, uncompromising critique of organized Christianity from Denmark’s most illustrious director.  In celebration, here’s a still:

GreenCine Daily has the scoop.

And now, Criterion, please, please, please? How ’bout a re-release of this classic in it’s shiny new print?

I’ve never seen “Day of Wrath” but it sounds fantastic, and I hope that DVD will come soon.

  • Seeing a print of Day of Wrath would make me unimaginably joyous. If you want to drive up to Chattanooga, Rick, I’ll drive the rest of the way to New York for it.

    Or not. :-)

  • Fox

Oh Rick, you just made my evening! That still alone is gorgeous.

Can you not rent the old Criterion Day of Wrath from Netflix? I know some local video stores have it, but I live in a lucky area. Maybe I should steal it for you, huh?

  • So…I guess I should finally watch this sometime, then?

  • Rick

Pat, Dreyer is a fabulous filmmaker … and you can get “Day of Wrath” singly on BFI region two discs, the Criterion ones come solely in a box set, with “Ordet” and “Gertrud”. I’m hoping they bring out the new “Day” print separate from the box set, which is looking less appealing to me, although that’s the only way to get Region 1 versions of the other two.

  • Rick

Phillip, that is really tempting … I’m about 3 and a half or four hours away from Chat … how far are you from NYC?

  • Rick

Fox, unfortunately, Netflix doesn’t have any of the Criterion box set … I’ve emailed them and bitched to no end. Your voice wouldn’t hurt …

  • Rick

    Even, Well … I don’t know if I’d go THAT far …

As anything by Dryer, you gotta gird your loins …

  • Girding loins… have I mentioned before how much I enjoy girding loins?

For years Dreyer was known for only for The Passion of Joan of Arc. I refer to the seventies and before when film books were how we cinephiles got most of our info and that’s all that was ever mentioned for him. But now with recent re-releases of Vampyr and Day of Wrath perhaps Dreyer films will see a rediscovery that will finally elevate to his rightful place in the pantheon instead of the guy who directed the Joan of Arc movie.

And frabjous day? Someone else just used that recently in a post title if I recall. Must you continuously borrow from me Rick? Must you?

  • Pat

OK, so I just added Day of Wrath to my Netflix queue, but I’m getting the message that it becomes available on DVD on September 9. Interesting…..wonder what’s up with that?

  • Rick

Jonathan — I had some of the best girded loin in this little grill here in downtown Tuscaloosa … they fix it with a little butter, a little tabasco …

And did you really use O Frabjous day in a blog-title? Well, comfort yourself that I only steal from the best …

  • Rick

Pat, I think it means that they are finally buying the Criterion box set … thank God. Now I can see Gertrud as well …

  • And did you really use O Frabjous day in a blog-title? Would I lie to you Rick. Go here. Must’ve been the excitement of the new Bill blog that made you miss the title.

And stealing from the best… not a bad idea. I’ve been stealing from hacks this whole time like an idiot.

  • Rick

Jonathan, that’s not the same title at all . . . where’s the calooh, callay in my title? Huh? Huh?

It probably wouldn’t have happened if I had any short-term memory.

And speaking of Girded Loins, I have taken a break from the masochistic task I have set forth for myself on this, my day off . . . watching “Satantango”. I see there is now a drunken Hungarian with a cheese roll on his head on my screen.

Ah, the artiness of it all!

    [press this, if you dare.]

  • So, I live in Chicago, and I went to the wonderful Music Box Theatre one night for a double feature.

    Dryer’s DAY OF WRATH
    and
    Cocteau’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Because of my bonehead friend, I missed most of DAY OF WRATH, but I caught the ending in a beatiful 35mm print.

All I can say about this release is, I want it now.

  • Rick

Joe, I am jealous. I want to live in Chicago … God, I’d love to see Beauty and the Beast on the big screen. Day of Wrath too, of course …

  • Ha. My suggestion was mostly a fantastical joke. I live about 30 minutes from Chattanooga during the school year and NYC is far, far away.

But look me up if you’re ever in the area.

  • Rick

Ah, heh heh … I was only kidding, too … Yes. That’s right. Kidding. [sob!]

  • Day of Wrath is the kind of foreign classic I steered clear of for years and years because it sounded stark and brittle and depressing only to finally get around to it and find it was pretty amazing.

I wonder if it’s playing anywhere besides IFC.

  • Rick

God, I hope so, Craig … I’d love to be close enough to go see it … I’d go quite a ways to see it.
