70 Top Vampires
Oct 11th, 2008 | By Rick | Category: News & CommentWhile I’m in Virginia visiting my daughter, posts may be fewer and further between. But here’s a list I found of the Top 70 Vampire Movies of All Time. Now: my first question is, why 70? Why not, say, 73 or maybe 58? 70 is a nice round number, but so is 60 … maybe it’s supposed to be ten times the perfect number seven, thereby giving it great symbolic power. I wonder: do vampires fear the number seven? Do they prefer the less-than-perfect six?
Anyway, as I scanned their list, I noticed number one was Nosferatu (1922), a good, safe choice and while I might put it at number 3 (behind Herzog’s remake), I was shocked — simply shocked! — to see what wasn’t on it. There’s no Vampyr! How can a list of even the five greatest vampire movies fail to include Dreyer’s classic?
But it’s ok, folks, Kolchak’s at number 12 …

Rick said,” 70 is a nice round number, but so is 60 … maybe it’s supposed to be ten times the perfect number seven, thereby giving it great symbolic power.” That sounds right!
I wonder: do vampires fear the number seven? Do they prefer the less-than-perfect six? Hi! Rick, You betcha!…666 Representational of /or symbolize evil….
Did some of my favorite Vampire flicks break the top twenty ceiling? You betcha!

I’m confused. Are there any westerns on this list? Any cowboys? Where’s Ed Harris? Or Viggo? What’s going on around here?!?!?
dcd,
Shadow of the Vampire is one of my personal faves … it’s very funny, as well as — at times — chilling. On the other hand, there are many in the top 20 that I don’t think belongs there.
Jonathan,
What do you have against vampires? They ride the range, they shoot off guns, they generally have a good old, manly time.
This prejudice of yours against our fanged friends is puzzling, at best. First you want vampires, then Viggo — who’s pretty close, in my not-so-humble opinion — and Ed Harris in all his dour glory!
You think you’re confused …
Glad to see The Addiction make it on the list. Also Vampire’s Kiss. This list also introduced me to films I wanna check out now (thought that may be a mistake…) like er, Blood and Donuts??
My my Mr. Rick, you’re certainly on a vampire kick as of late. I also confess a certain fascination with the little bloodsuckers, although not enough of one that I could even begin to put together a Top 70 Vampire Films list, much less a Top 5.
And really, no Vampyr? Doesn’t that kind of torpedo the validity of the list? Then again, lists are supposed to tick people off, that’s what makes them interesting.
Ok, I just read the fine print. The list is composed and ranked based on IMDB user scores and RottenTomatoes percentages. Yeah, letting IMDB users pick your list is going to result in some very uneven choices, and probably explains why Vampyr is nowhere to be seen.
Fox, I gotta check out Blood and Doughnuts as well. Just for the title.
I just looked them up on IMDB, and there’s two of them. One in 1995 and one in 2000, and they’re both vampire flicks. The 2000 one is a short, however, and it’s the 1995 feature the list has.
Evan, it is “Fangs for the Memories” month after all.
And, yeah, I think it’s probably the fact that IMDB users had a hand in it as well. The same bunch who rated “The Dark Knight” the greatest movies of all time for a while.
