Now to Jonathan’s idea. I like it. It’s like “The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York.” Perhaps we should start with Guys & Dolls in honor of the idea. I’d be happy to host since that’s my blog’s kind of movie. I think everyone will want to join in after a while because we ARE the coolest kids on the block after all. I count at least Rick, Jonathan, Fox, Arbo, Pat, Bill, Miranda, maybe Sheila to start.
Let’s do it . . . over at your blog for Guys and Dolls I’ve gotta get it and watch it again, it’ll be good for me. What about beginning after the first of the year? Give us time to re-watch the flick? Those suspects sound about right . . .
By the way, I finally saw “Man on Wire” — just a few minutes ago –
Rick, thanks for the “someone in this thread” suggested rotating blogs. Glad my suggestions mean so much to you you’re not even aware I suggested them. But Marilyn – who is the best blogger on Earth – does remember. That’s why she’s my Queen. You’re the Court Jester.
Now then, I think it should be expected that we all watch the movie again even if we’ve seen it multiple times just so it’s fresh in our heads. Now are we going to be picking movies for subtext discussion or just whatever the hell we want to watch. I’m fine with either but I definitely think the host blog for the month gets to pick the movie. And it should be something that is easily accessible through Netflix or your local Video Store.
Anyway, I’m excited about it. I love writing up little seen movies but it’s great when everyone will have just seen the movie recently. Also, with rotating blogs as opposed to a central site Film Club Blog we will get other regular readers to chime in from time to time as well. And the host blogger can put up another post or two after it but we’ll all know, and be expected, to keep going to that post for discussion into the week.
If we start it halfway into January I can definitely have Guys and Dolls watched by then. I already have several in mind I want to do that involve movies that either include some morally questionable characters or plot or movies that I have problems with along moral lines and would love to see what everyone else thinks.
I know I said one last thing before but now it’s two last things I guess. Can I design a simple sidebar widget for this film of the month club that we can all put up? I’ll make it simple, words on a plaque simple, so it won’t clash with anyone’s blog aesthetics.
Oh yeah, and Rick, you owe me 10 percent of Coosa Creek’s income from this post or Exxon Mobile is going to be all over my ass.
Jonathan, I said the check will be in the mail in a comment above, you should pay more attention. And I thought you and Fox were the same person.
But I like the attention you’re paying to the little thing we’ve got going (how’s that for a segue?) I like the idea of starting it half-way through January, and by all means, if you design a widget, I will put it in my sidebar. As long as it doesn’t contain any of those virus thingy’s.
And whom-ever’s blog is hosting the thing that month I will be glad to plug away, so we can get some of those drop ins.
I am totally down with the Film Club idea. And I agree that we should all put fresh eyes on it… whether it’s something we’ve seen 10 times or never. And I agree that the host blog should pick the movie (and no whining if you don’t like it!). Basically, I agree with everything Jonathan says and will say later this morning.
Do we have any constraints on what can/can’t be picked? Are we going with Guys and Dolls for a tentative January? I’ve never seen it so this will be good. Also, should we do this like every other month, or every two months?
Jeez, Fox, you’re just a Jonathan yes-man.
If you even CARE what I think, I think no there should be no constraints on what we pick, only that it be available in some form for everyone to see. I think Guys and Dolls would be great; I think we can find enough subtext and etc. in that film, and a mid-Jan start date is fine with me.
I think we could probably do it once a month; after all, it means basically that we all see a flick chosen by someone else once a month, but the bulk of the work is on the blog-owner who will choose (and isn’t every other month the same as every two months?)
So we can e-mail Bill and Arbo and Sheila and others and see who wants to join in. I was going to write something up but it would probably be better to go with e-mails. Once we start in January everyone will know anyway and can decide if they want to join in.
Sure, go for it my blogging brotha, after all it WAS your idea (after Marilyn and I got the ball rolling, that is . . .)
Some of them, though, don’t list their emails, perhaps if you write something up we can put it as a static page on our blogs, then refer our victims . . . ah, er, I mean potential participants . . . in their comment streams to that write up.
Great! Mid January (how about January 12) with Guys & Dolls at my place. Garbo Talks got nothin’ on Brando Sings! I am already readying my treatise on the impossibility of conformity in an economically depressed society as voiced by Nicely-Nicely Johnson in “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.”
(FYI, our high school produced this musical. I must have seen it on stage about 15 times.)
Sounds good. I think I will write something later today about it.
[...] I was initially brought into the fold by the thoroughly awesome RICK OLSEN at COOSA CREEK CINEMA , for which I’m forever [...]
Hmmm…
How do my links get in here? That’s exceedingly mysterious….
Marilyn, I can’t tell you how honoured I am that my name was brought up in terms of this prestigious group of people. Basically because most individuals contained in this fab portion either don’t know me well or not at all.
Starting next month, I want to begin pursuing the acting thing seriously. I may also have to take on a job (oh yeah, as in cold hard cash – nonartistic or not …) in addition to all of the writing I’m doing.
So I may not be able to participate consistently. But I’d very much like to.
I’d definitely be willing to host all of you over at CINEMATIC PASSIONS. However, due to time constraints, it may work better if it’s a film that I’m all ready familiar with.
I’d love to help out, though. Someone will have to keep me posted.
Miranda, the comment above you is a pingback, automatically generated by your blog and sent to my blog every time you link to me. Cool, huh?
And we’d love to have you participate when you can, and good luck in the acting biz!
Miranda – We’re just a bunch of wankers (that’s for Rick) so don’t be intimidated. Work is one thing, but don’t stay away because you don’t think you can keep up. This aint’ a foot race (except with Jonathan, of course, who we can beat easily because he smokes). I like your stuff over at Daniel’s place, though I admit I haven’t visited your blog much, and actually, Daniel’d be a great one to add to the list. He’s so smart. Nick Plowman, too, if he’s gotten over his jitters about life in general…
Aw, Rick, you’re such a lovely guy.
Marilyn, you goddess, I will most definitely give it my all. There are only 24 hours in the day. But I will do what I can.
I’m actually good friends with both boys that you mention. So I will e-mail them pronto and discuss it with them. Totally agree. They would be wonderful addtions to this group. They know what they’re talking about. At any rate.
Should I mention it to Craig?
Also, it’s a bloody shame that I have never seen Guys & Dolls in its entirety. Just bits and pieces here and there. I adore Jean Simmons. She was terrific.
I’ll go now and give my boys a shout…
Yes, Craig would be great.
We have to ask Peter Nellhaus, too. I want him to pick a great Asian film for us; I need a push in that direction.
I second the Daniel idea and Craig and Nick and Peter. Although I watch a lot of Asian films, they’re just the obvious ones, and he can put us on to some others, maybe some Thai.
You say we’re wankers? I resemble that remark . . .
Hey, I definitely want in on this!
“Guys and Dolls” is my all-time, second favorite stage musical (after “Sweeney Todd”). I think I’ve seen it on stage as many times as Marilyn has. I haven’t seen the movie in years – but would love to see it again.
Come on aboard, Pat . . . you can be a charter member. All it takes is three easy payments of $19.95, plus shipping and handling . . . just kidding.
I’ve always wanted to get on a Thai.
Marilyn, Rick and everybody else…
Craig says he’d be happy to join this elite little film society…
I’ve always wanted to get on a Thai.
Thanks for that, Fox . . .
Personally, it makes me want to Thai one on.
HA! Nice pun, Rick. I love puns… especially when they are random and don’t make sense. But mine was just straight up sincere. I love Asian women and am really attracted to them (I apologize to Miranda, Marilyn, and any other female in this enormous thread for acting like a pig.)
P.S. You’re at 124 comments now and have a shot at taking down Jonathan Lappers record of 200 comments. I’m sure he will be here soon to discuss the legalities/particulars of this in case you get near his record. For example: He will probably include a clause that says he reached 200 in one 24 hour period while you reached it over two days. So, just get ready.
All jokes aside (and I do so hate to put jokes aside) Rick could get a 1,000 comments and I’d be thrilled. But to the point of my comment…
Rick, I just put up a post on this so we could discuss it in a centralized location, so to speak, rather than the 20 Actresses Meme comment thread. And except for about five of us, no one else knows about it so I’m hoping my post will alert more bloggers to it since it won’t be hidden away in the comments of an unrelated post. If you wouldn’t mind directing inquiries there so we could discuss further I would be muchos appreciative. Thank you kind sir. And if you like I can come back and comment 80 more times so you can reach 200. Anyway, here it is: Calling All Bloggers . I realize it’s late in the day so there probably won’t be much going on with the post until tomorrow morning but just to give you a heads up. Thanks.
Fox – I am another female on this thread. I often wonder if my unisex name confuses people – it’s short for Patricia. And I’m not offended. It takes a lot worse than that to offend me.
Jonathan, I will gladly direct folks to your blog. If you want to get the skinny on the new club, go to Jonathan’s post here.
Pat-
Sorry I left you out. I knew you were a female, but this post has been so long that I forgot when/who was on it. “But why didn’t you just scroll up, Fox? You MORON!!” … It’s a fair point, but I just didn’t.
What’s going on here? Why is this thread still going? What are you people talking about?
Who knows? It’s taken on a life of its own . . . it’s like the Great Post of ‘07, that began on Valentine’s day and didn’t end until the perpetrator’s head exploded 23 days later . . .
I think we’re trying to decide if Fox is being offensive.
The answer is probably “Yes”.
indubitably yes. We all know that, who’ve hung around the massive comment threads at Jonathan’s long enough. And this has happened to me a lot, I’ll go away for a half a day, and come back and see that I’ve missed a humongous conversation on somebody’s blog.
To Fox – No worries, I really didn’t mean to chastise you. In retrospect, my comment sounds whinier than I intended. I actaully do run into a bit of gender confusion in the blogosphere due to my unisex handle – and I ‘ve received a number of odd comments on my blog that indicate some people believe I”m a male – so sometimes I just try to set the record straight. (Not to mention how many times I”ve been confused with Pat Piper.)
Just doin’ my part to keep this comments thread going on forever and ever and ever…..
I can’t even remember what I would’ve been offensive about b/c this post started like 5 days ago.
Pat-
To be honest, when I first read your blog I thought the same thing… that you were male. It was probably a bit of my sexist stereotyping assuming that you were a male since you had a film blog. But I learned quickly when either you or some commenter drop an feminine pronoun in there and I was like “OHHH!!! Pat can go both ways, DUH!”
P.S. Rick- Lapper is quietly nervous about this thread topping 204.
Not at all Fox. But I know you want it to, which is why you keep coming back to it to keep the comments going. Ah yes Fox, so sly. Gosh, I didn’t notice that at all.
And a blogging tip to Bill. If you’ve been following a comment thread on one blog (your own or someone else’s) and about an hour goes by without anyone re-commenting start surfing the familiar blogs. You will almost always discover they have started a new conversation elsewhere. We’re a bouncy group, kind of like bar-hopping only it’s blog-hopping.
Well, I know you guys aren’t over at MY blog…
Where’s Marilyn? I think she’s mad at me, and I want to smooth things over.
Bill – I actually ahd to do some work. Fancy that! But if you want me to be mad at you, no problem. Arbo loves it!
I don’t know what you’re talking about Jonathan??? Are you saying I’m an instigator??? (clasps hands in front, whistles, stares at the sky and walks away)
Also, on the people dropping off of threads… we’re at work too!
Like today I have been mostly AWOL b/c I’m moving between offices.
No, I don’t want that. Now get back to work!
Fox, perish the thought about you being an instigator of anything.
I drop off of threads all the time, I’m not as good at keeping a window open in the background, then refreshing once in a while. I think I’ve got ADHD or something . . .
Marilyn just got mad at me over at Jonathan’s. I must admit it was thrilling.
And every once in awhile I have to do some work as well. double fancy that!
In truth, I’d like to write a review now, but I haven’t seen a movie in a couple of days that inspired me. Maybe Gumby Dharma. Do we have any Gumby fans out there? Or maybe the Barbara Stanwyck/Douglas Sirk collaboration All I Desire?
Gumby Dharma? As in the guy who “once was a little green slab of clay”? I’m intrigued…..
Yup.
I’d like to hear about either Gumby Dharma or the Douglas Sirk film. Go for it …
Douglas Sirk’s Magnificient Obsession comes out on Criterion in January… it could be a nice tie in with Film Club.
Hi! Rick,
Wow!…I posted on this thread when I was 3 years olds…went away for a couple of days, returned and I was 96 and 97 years olds (respectively,)…now I ‘am 149 years olds.
How long Rick? ….How long?
The question is will Rick at Coosa Creek Cinema make it into the Guinness(Guiness) of Book of World Records ( My fingers are **crossed**)
dcd
So, of course, I reviewed Vera Drake.
